International Conference on Standardization of Language Resources and Translation and Interpreting Services (2018)

 (Hangzhou, China – 16-17 June, 2018)

 

The fast pace of economic development in China has meant that translation and interpreting services have become increasingly important. These services are essential for Chinese companies to sell its products and services globally and for other countries to sell in China, manufacturing and other industrial sectors, as well as government and non-government institutes and organizations.

 

ISO TC 37 is the ISO technical committee which deals with language and terminology. To coincide with their annual meetings, which will take place from 10 to 15 June, 2018 in Hangzhou, the "International Conference on Standardization of Language Resources and Translation and Interpreting Services (2018)" will take place from 16 to 17 June, 2018. This event will take place immediately after the ISO/TC37 meetings and at the same venue.

 

The conference is geared to serve as a platform for international communication and exchange among individuals, organizations, and companies who are interested in language resource management, translation services and interpreting services as well as in standardization. Presentations, workshops and panel discussions are organized in the following four tracks:

·                Standards for Translation Service Providers (TSPs)

·                Language Resource Management for Manufacturing and in the Full Life Cycle of a Product

·                Education and training for Translation Services in China and the world

Speaker: Laurent Romary (chair of ISO/TC37)

 

Laurent Romary is Directeur de Recherche at Inria, France and director general of DARIAH. He received a PhD degree in computational linguistics in 1989 and his Habilitation in 1999. He carries out research on the modeling of semi-structured documents, with a specific emphasis on texts and linguistic resources. He has been active in standardization activities with ISO, as chair of committee ISO/TC 37/SC 4 (2002-2014), chair of ISO/TC 37 (2016-) and the Text Encoding Initiative, as member (2001-2011) and chair (2008-2011) of its technical council. He has been involved in the definition of the scientific information policy of CNRS (2005-2006), the Max-Planck Digital Library (2006-2008) and Inria (2006-).

HUANG Youyi is a member of the Academic Degree Committee of the State Council, executive vice president of the Translators Association of China (TAC), vice president of China Academy of Translation and Interpretation, director of the English Expert Panel of China Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI), director of the National Accreditation Committee for Professional Translators and Interpreters, and director of China National Committee for Translation and Interpreting Education.

He is chief expert of the Inter-Ministerial Meeting of the Ministry of Education for Chinese Translation Standards and Communication of Terms of Traditional Chinese Culture, chief editor of China Translators Journal, deputy editorial director of the Public Diplomacy Quarterly, and deputy editor-in-chief of Library of Chinese Classics.

He served as vice president of the Federation of International Translators (FIT), deputy director general and editor-in-chief of China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration, and president of china.org.cn.

Speaker: Monika Popiolek (president of the Polish Association of Translation Companies)

Monika Popiolek, President of MAart Agency Ltd since 1991 and Mobiling Ltd. since 2011. Graduate of the University of Warsaw Faculty of Modern Languages - English Institute (MA), Executive MBA Programme at the Warsaw University of Technology Business School (WUT BS, London Business School, HEC Paris, NHH Bergen - joint MBA degree), and a PhD Management Programme at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH) - research specialization in strategic quality management. Apart from managing several companies, Monika is currently the President of the Polish Association of Translation Companies (PSBT)  (since 2009), a certified sworn translator and interpreter (since 1998), international standards expert, part-time lecturer (visiting lecturer at several universities), ISO auditor trainer, Chair of the Polish Committee for Standardization (PKN) General Issues and Management Systems Sector (since 2010), Chair of the PKN Technical Committee 256 on Language, Terminology, Translation and Interpreting – ISO TC 37 Mirror Committee (since 2008), Head of Polish national delegation to ISO TC 37 (since 2007), as well as OASIS, ISO and CEN expert (since 2007), and the EUATC Liaison Representative to ISO TC 37 (since 2014). She has a number of industry and academic publications on standards, Quality Assurance, strategic quality management and terminology, and presented at leading industry conferences (Loc World, ATA, TM-Europe, ATC, EUATC, EC’s Translating Europe Forums and Workshops, Points of View Bi-Annual Conference, numerous workshops etc.). Monika is also affiliated with many language and business organisations (ATA voting member, TEPIS expert member, KIG Council member, TC 37 Steering Committee member, WeConnect, among others). Speaker: LUO Weihua (head of translation team, Damo Academy, Alibaba)

 

LUO Weihua, senior staff algorithm engineer, currently serves as the lead of the translation platform group of MIT Lab, DAMO Academy, Alibaba. He sets up and leads the team to build the translation technology and business infrastructure of Alibaba, which supports a number of international business platforms of Alibaba Group. Prior to joining Alibaba, he was an associate professor in the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Information, the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and has been engaged in the research, development and engineering of machine translation technology for a decade.

 

Speech Topic: User information in the context of Industry 4.0 and Made in China 2025

Speaker: Michael Fritz (Executive Director of tekom, Germany)

 

Michael Fritz holds a PhD in media sciences and a degree in business administration and specializes in marketing. He worked for several associations, e.g. as head of an institute for lifelong learning. Since 1996 he is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gesellschaft für Technische Kommunikation – tekom Deutschland e.V. and since 2013 also CEO of Europe’s largest association for technical communication – tekom Europe. He is also CEO of tcworld GmbH, a global services company which organizes business conferences, trade shows, consulting and more. Since March 2018, he is CEO of iiRDS-Consortium. The iiRDS-Consortium is a working community within tekom, the largest international professional association for Technical Communication. The Consortium publishes and develops the "Intelligent Information Request and Delivery Standard" (iiRDS) as an Open Source Standard under Creative Commons CC BY ND. Membership in the Consortium is open to all interested parties worldwide.

Peter Reynolds is Executive Director at Kilgray Translation Technologies. Prior to Kilgray he worked at Idiom Technologies Inc. (now SDL PLC), Berlitz GlobalNet, Bowne Global Solution and Lionbridge. Peter has been actively involved in the development and promotion of standards (notably XLIFF) for over a decade – he is the convener of the ISO working group which deals with translation (ISO TC 37 SC 5 WG1), an Irish expert to ISO/CEN, the liaison representative of OASIS to TC 37, and Deputy Chair of the Irish ISO TC 37 Mirror Committee. He holds and BSc and an MBA degree from Open University, and is a localization and translation industry veteran.

Haris Ghinos is managing partner of ELIT Language Services and an AIIC Consultant Interpreter with Calliope Interpreters.

Started his career as staff conference interpreter at the European Commission in Brussels and has since provided simultaneous and consecutive interpretation in over 3,500 high level conferences and meetings for the European Union, UN, NATO, IMF, World Bank, ILO, FIFA, FIBA, UEFA, Eurojust, ICAO, the Council of Europe as well as for the private sector. Has been working at the highest level for the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister and the Government at large. He held managerial positions with US multinationals in the field of Waste Management and Environmental Management Systems, as well as with Athens based conference organisation and advertising companies. He is a member of the Council of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) for Greece and Cyprus (2009-2012) and member of the Advisory Board of the Association of Conference Interpreters of Serbia. He received his first degree from the Department of Physics, University of Athens, and holds degrees in War Studies from King's College, London, in International Politics from CERIS, Brussels and in Finance from the Economic University of Athens.

Ms. Pérez Guarnieri is an interpreter and translator with more than 20 years’ experience working for international agencies such as the UN, the OAS, FIFA, FAO, World Rugby, The American Embassy, The British Council and The Green Climate Fund, in addition to multinational companies and government agencies. In 2015 she joined Calliope -Interpreters, the prestigious international network of consultant interpreters. Ms. Veronica Perez Pérez Guarnieri is an Adjunct Professor of “Interpretation” at the School for Certified Translators at Universidad de Belgrano, Buenos Aires, Argentina. In addition, she is Full Professor of “Sight Translation” at the School for the technical specialization in Conference Interpreting at the I.E.S. en Lenguas Vivas “Juan Ramón Fernández”, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Cheng-shu Yang received her MA in Literature from the School of Arts and Letters at Tohoku University in Japan and her PhD in Linguistics from Beijing Foreign Studies University. Her research is focused on Interpreting Studies, Translator Studies, and International Medical T/I Studies. Currently she is the director of the Graduate Institute of Cross Cultural Studies at Fu-Jen Catholic University in Taiwan (Aug. 2013-). She also served as the director of the Graduate Institute of Translation and Interpretation Studies at Fu-Jen Catholic University from 1994 to 2000 and from 2006 to 2010. She has served as a Chinese-Japanese conference interpreter at about 1000 conferences starting from 1988. Cheng-shu Yang has participated in National Science Council / Ministry of Science and Technology projects every year from 1988 to 2018, producing approximately 30 research papers in the last 5 years. She is currently promoting the International Medical Translation Program of Fu-Jen Catholic University, which started in September 2014. On October 31, 2015, she was part of the establishment of the International Medical Translators and Interpreters Association, and serves as the Deputy Director of the association (2015 to 2017). In January 2018, Cheng-shu Yang was elected as the second Director of the Association.
